Founded in 2001, it emerged from the vision of the Gulshan Foundation for Education Development (GFED), an altruistic organization dedicated to the socio-economic and educational development of the region.

Driven by the philanthropic efforts of Mr. Kutubuddin Ahmed, a local businessman and realtor, SIU's establishment marked a significant step towards providing quality higher education in Sylhet.

The university's journey began in October 2001 with its inaugural academic session. Under the leadership of its first vice-chancellor, Sadruddin Ahmed Chowdhury, SIU strived to create an educational institution with a difference. Its core values emphasized a blend of rigorous academic instruction with practical skills development, aiming to produce not only competent professionals but also individuals with strong moral grounding.
