Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) is a public university in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Nestled in the heart of Dhaka, Bangladesh, stands Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) – a beacon of knowledge and progress in the realm of agriculture. Its roots stretch back to 1938, making it the oldest agricultural university in South Asia. A testament to the vision of Sher-e-Bangla A. K. Fazlul Huq, the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh, SAU has journeyed through eras, adapting and evolving to meet the ever-changing needs of the agricultural landscape.

Initially established as the Bengal Agricultural Institute (BAI), the university served as a crucial center for agricultural education and research during the British Raj. In 1947, following the partition of India, it was renamed the East Pakistan Agricultural Institute. With the dawn of Bangladesh's independence in 1971, the institute shed its colonial past and embraced a new identity, befitting the aspirations of the newly-formed nation. It was then christened the Bangladesh Agricultural Institute (BAI).

However, the year 2001 marked a significant turning point in SAU's history. Recognizing its immense contribution to the agricultural sector, the government elevated its status to a full-fledged university, honoring the legacy of Sher-e-Bangla A. K. Fazlul Huq by rechristening it Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University.

Over the decades, SAU has blossomed into a premier institution, offering a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various agricultural disciplines. The impact of SAU's legacy transcends the boundaries of Bangladesh. The university is a well-respected member of prestigious international organizations like the Association of Agricultural Universities of South Asia (AAUSA) and the Asian Association of Agricultural Colleges and Universities (AAACU). These collaborations facilitate knowledge exchange and research partnerships, propelling SAU's standing in the global agricultural arena.
