The University of Klagenfurt (German: Universität Klagenfurt or Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt, AAU) is a federal Austrian research university and the largest research and higher education institution in the state of Carinthia. It has its campus in Klagenfurt.
AAUK was founded in 1933, and it relaunched in 1970. In 1970, the academy underwent a significant transformation, expanding its scope and becoming the "University of Klagenfurt." This marked the official birth of AAU, embarking on a new chapter of academic exploration and research.
In 1979, AAU played a pivotal role in founding the Alps-Adriatic Rectors' Conference (AARC), fostering academic collaboration and cultural exchange across the region. This initiative solidified AAU's commitment to bridging borders and promoting international understanding.
The fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 opened new doors for AAU, as it actively fostered partnerships with universities in neighboring countries like Slovenia, Italy, and Croatia. This period saw a surge in international exchange programs and joint research projects, further strengthening AAU's global outlook.
Recognizing the growing importance of technology, AAU established the Faculty of Technical Sciences in 1992, offering innovative programs in computer science, information technology, and engineering. This move equipped students with the skills needed to thrive in the evolving digital landscape.
The new millennium brought continued growth for AAU, with the addition of the Faculty of Health Sciences in 2004. This expansion catered to the increasing demand for skilled healthcare professionals and reflected AAU's commitment to addressing societal challenges.
In 2005, the university officially adopted the name "Alps Adriatic University of Klagenfurt," highlighting its unique geographical location and dedication to cross-border cooperation. Today, AAU remains a vibrant center of learning and research, attracting students and scholars from around the world.
